Seed Thought

Though we are the largest democracy, women in India find themselves under-represented and far-removed from decision making levels. Women face many political, socio-economic, ideological and psychological obstacles. There is a dire need to remove these obstacles for their equal participation in all Spheres of Life. We will have to ensure that young girl students realize their potential, guide and nurture them, so that they believe, there is a bright future that awaits them. On this backdrop, and by a conscious deliberation between Dr. Kodela Siva Prasad Rao, Hon’ble Speaker of Legislative Assembly, Shri. N. Chandrababu Naidu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Shri. Rahul V. Karad, the seed thought of National Women’s Parliament (NWP) was conceived. Round Table - Youth Connect

Women Youth Connect

Concept

Women Youth Connect is an activity to facilitate experience sharing among young women from diverse backgrounds like politics, social sector, education, sports, industry, media, cinema, arts & culture, judiciary and young aspiring women students. This is also a plat-form for interaction between these young women leaders from different fields and women legislators, parliamentarians and NGO/CSR representatives of India. These ex-changes and interactions will create fresh ideas to address the problems faced by young women of the country, and thereby generate recommendations to the Andhra Pradesh Government regarding ten important topics in Women Empowerment.

Process
Young women leaders participate in round table discussions on two consecutive days. Ini-tial facilitation on day one will generate understanding and exploration of one out of ten topics allotted to each table, followed by initial recommendations to the government. Here each facilitator will be given 10 guided questions to facilitate the discussion and ensure that each table will have discussion on same areas related to each topic. This will be followed by an intense discussion on this topic, in terms of challenges identified by the young women. Furthermore, these challenges are complemented with recommen-dations and solutions which specifically involve the Andhra Pradesh Government on how to fight these challenges.

The list of topics are :
  1. Women in politics
  2. Women’s Education
  3. Women’s health and nutrition
  4. Women as entrepreneurs
  5. Women’s legal rights
  6. Women’s social protection
  7. Women in Research and innovation
  8. Women and digital literacy
  9. Women’s Social Development
  10. Women’s role in Sustainable Development Goals

During this exercise, the mentors, with diverse backgrounds like politics, social sector, education, sports, industry, media, cinema, arts & culture, judiciary interact with young women leaders and share their experiences for women empowerment followed by answering questions related to challenges and solutions to increase women empowerment to prepare realistic action plans.
On day two, the discussion about one out of the ten themes of women empowerment continues. Again, students brainstorm on one out of the ten themes.
Furthermore, they propose recommendations to the Government on three levels: family/personal level, community level, and government level. Write down the solutions on the flip chart; please insert your answers into the NWP-app. Each member at the table likewise presents their own perspectives about women empowerment; their dreams for future and challenges associated with dreams they have for women empowerment; solutions to increase women empowerment and finally come up with their PERSONAL action plan regarding their dreams. Further they discuss and decide the ways they connect each other beyond National Women’s Parliament.
Facilitation & Expected Outcomes
Each group consists of 100 students and faculty members, two pre-oriented additional faculty as facilitators supported by three pre-oriented student rapporteurs ( one rapporteur for mobile data collection, one rapporteur for documentation and one rapporteur for co-facilitation), one NGO/ corporate representative and one MLA/MP as mentor. While the facilitator initiates the discussion, the mentor clarifies the queries raised by Young women leaders and enable them to prepare plans with resolutions and recommendations related to specific themes of women empowerment allotted to the group. In order to overview the process, assign one Coordinator responsible for every 10 groups.

Expected Outcome

1. To understand the challenges for young women in their development cycle
2. To receive suggested solutions to increase women empowerment from those who are victims of various challenges.
3. To create Working Group of Young Women for each theme of women empowerment and work in coordination with Government to address the challenges.
4. To consolidate the recommendations on government, community and family level, using mobile application and to provide the same as input for Amaravati resolution as policy document
